Jetting off to New Places — whether for business or fun — it can take a lot out of you. And you want to be at your best when seeing new places and experiencing different cultures.
Follow a few easy tips to stay well as you take your travels around the world:
Stay Hydrated
It is important to keep your body well hydrated in the dry (more like zero humidity) cabin air. Drink plenty of water and try to avoid carbonated drinks. Dehydration makes you more prone to viruses, and can make jet lag symptoms worse. Electrolyte drinks are extremely helpful. Using Non-medicated, pure saline eye drops during the flight will keep your eyes feeling refreshed. Non medicated nose spray will do the same trick to your nasal passages.
Medication within reach
The baggage usually arrives safe at the destination, though rare – but chances are that it may get lost. Therefore to be on the safe side, keep enough supply of medication to last you the duration of your trip.
- Be Sure to have a brief medical history with you at all times (insurance company name and address, social security number, medical history, allergies, blood type, current medications / dosages, name and address of emergency contact person)
- Pack a small first-aid kit with Aspirin or Aspirin substitute, vitamins, cold tablets, stomach remedies, bandage strips, and your usual prescription medication.
- If you are diabetic, pack all necessary snacks and medications within reach in case of meal changes or delays.
Stay Moving
When you are on long flights, try to secure an aisle seat or exit row so you can stretch and walk the aisle whenever possible to avoid blood clotting and joint pain.
Scrub Up
Keep antibacterial hand sanitizer with you at all times. As long as it is less than three ounces, you’ll be able to take it on board your flight to ward off germs that can be found on your seat or other places along your trip. And take advantage of every instance you have to wash your hands so that you aren’t bringing germs back as souvenirs.
Jet Lag
Jet lag is disorienting, and it can falsely mirror the feeling of being sick. Jet lag is a temporary disorder among air travelers who rapidly travel across 3 or more time zones. Jet lag results from the slow adjustment of the body clock to the destination time, so that daily rhythms and the internal drive for sleep and wakefulness are out of synchronization with the new environment. To stay healthy and feeling well, do the following:
- Avoid situations requiring critical decision making, such as important meetings – for the first day after arrival.
- Adapt to the local schedule as soon as possible.
- Optimize exposure to sunlight after arrival from either direction.
- Eat meals appropriate to the local time, drink plenty of water, and avoid excess caffeine or alcohol.
- Take short naps (20 – 30 minutes) to increase energy but not undermine nighttime sleep.
