International Driving Permit

Beware of International Driving Permit Scams

An international driving permit (IDP), sometimes mistakenly referred to as an International Driver’s License (IDL), can help you communicate with peace officers in other countries where English is not their first language. However, there are a lot of scams out there when it comes to obtaining an IDP, and it is important to be on the lookout for them.

What Is an International Driving Permit?

As a translation of your state-issued driver’s license, an international driving permit makes it easier for those who don’t speak English, or not very well, to understand your identification. It is a multi-page mini booklet that contains all the information on your driver’s license, but is translated into other languages.

What an International Driving Permit Is NOT

An international driving permit is not a substitute for a state-issued ID card. You cannot use it as a photo ID, proof of residence, etc. It cannot be used in place of a government-issued driver’s license, and if you are caught driving in the US or any other country without a government-issued ID, you can be fined or even arrested for driving without a license or driving with a suspended or revoked license.

How to Spot an International Driving Permit Scam

There are only two organizations in the US that are able to issue an international driving permit: the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). If you are being offered an IDP from any other organization, it is most likely a scam. A scam may also promise you can use it as a form of photo identification, or it will replace your state-issued Driver’s License.

If an organization is charging more than $40 for an international driving permit, it is most likely a scam as well. AAA and AATA typically charge less than $20 for an IDP. Some scams can charge up to $600.

Is an IDP Right for You?

If you already have a state-issued driver’s license and want to be able to drive in other countries, you may want to consider getting an international driving permit from either AAA or AATA. It will allow you to communicate better with law enforcement in other countries when traveling.
